The sea was calm on September 4, 1622 when the Spanish Treasure Galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha sailed from Havana Cuba. The sailors went about their tasks as the Atocha headed north towards Spain. The ship was carrying tons of silver and gold bars along with thousands of pieces of eight, silver reals, emeralds, precious gems and other priceless artifacts for the King Of Spain.

The next evening the seas began build and the wind howled through the sails. The Atocha was headed directly into the path of a vicious hurricane forever cementing her place in nautical history and in the hearts and minds of anyone dreaming of Spanish Treasure.

September 6, 1622, the Atocha smashed onto the shallow coral reefs of the Marquesas Keys (Marquesas Keys Data) twenty miles from Key West in the Florida Keys. One can only imagine the terror as their ship was torn apart and one hundred and twenty men were tossed into the sea only to drown or be shredded by the sharp coral. Only five would live to tell the tale of that terrible night.

For 358 years the Nuestra Senora de Atocha lay quietly on the floor of the Caribbean until treasure hunter Mel Fischer found the ship after 20 years of searching. Mel Fischer would begin each day uttering the his now famous words "Today's the Day". In 1985 his words became reality when he located the over 650 millions dollars worth of real Spanish treasure.
